You're Allowed to Do It Your Own Way and It Gets to Be Fun
How I stopped outsourcing my creative voice and finally let myself write, share, and create in a way that actually feels like me.
For the longest time, I've believed that the content I create and share on social media needed to be a certain way.
I've got e-books, templates, custom GPTs, you name it.
And while most of the content I've shared, particularly over the last eight months, has been based on things I truly believe and know to be true, I felt like my content had lost its soul a little.
I had all the concepts. I had documented my take on things.
And while some of my content took off, I found it was never the polished, perfectly optimised, edited-by-AI content.
It was actually the content that I thought of randomly or that came to me in a burst of inspiration.
Rediscovering my love of writing
So I took time away from socials and spent that time developing a new experience of my own.
And while I was doing this, I rediscovered my love of writing.
I have always loved writing and I have a dream to be an author one day.
While writing up the content for each voice note drop of the experience I was creating, it dawned on me that instead of focusing on long captions on my social media content as my writing outlet, I should just start writing blog-style content.
I didn't want to be serious or structured.
I just wanted to play around, try different styles of writing, and basically learn to express my ideas and philosophies.
So I set up a blog and set myself the goal of writing three blogs before I officially published it.
The first three poured out of me, followed by another, and then another.
All of a sudden, I had five blogs live and man, did it thrill me.
I hadn't felt this excited about my content in years.
The notebook that became a block
I decided then that I wanted to buy a special book to write my blogs in because I felt most connected to writing by hand rather than typing.
Then I promptly froze.
I put pressure on this notebook having to be perfect and didn't let myself sit down to write for almost five days, even though I had blogs ready to come out and I was so excited to start this new book.
I had decided to call it Volume 1, as I intended it to be the first book of many that captured my words.
And somehow, in that mindset, I stalled.
Hard.
Then I forced myself to sit down and just see where my pen took me.
Those first few pages weren't neat, tidy, or even error-free, and that unleashed something in me.
All of a sudden, in one afternoon, I had written five more blogs, which meant I now had ten blogs to my name.
And I was stoked.
The crazy part is, though, that this could have happened months ago.
Reclaiming my voice
I could have let myself follow the inspiration to write and write freely, but I had become obsessed with having to do it the way someone else had told me to.
Honestly, I felt like I had lost my voice and had myself believing that I needed AI to help me.
Of course, that's not true.
Because, like I say in almost everything I share, we have the words, the knowledge, the insight, and the understanding within us.
We just need to reconnect to ourselves to find it.
And one of the biggest things stopping us from reconnecting is when we override those little moments of inspiration or the "ooh, that could be cool" thoughts because we compare it to what Sarah on TikTok is doing.
She says to do it this way, so then we have ourselves believing that's how we should do it too.
Inspiration versus obligation
Now, don't get me wrong here.
You might read or listen to someone talking about doing something a certain way and it ignites something in you.
That is your inspiration talking.
I'm referring to when you're doing something a certain way that you don't enjoy because you believe that's the right way or the only way to get whatever result you're looking for.
That's when you can politely call bullshit and step away.
Because the reality is, there is no one right way to do anything.
And trying to do something a certain way because you think you have to in order to achieve what you want?
That's when you start selling your soul one piece at a time.
Then, like me, one day you realise you're not lit up about what you're doing and you realise you got caught up in the fallacy of having to do it a certain way.
The spark always returns
The best part about having that realisation is that you get to peel back the layers and really take some time to play around with other ways of doing things.
Until, of course, you find the way that reignites your spark.
And then you've found your right way.
At least for the moment.
Because things change.
You change.
It's simply a matter of checking in with yourself and letting yourself be led by what feels good to you.
You're allowed to do it your own way, and it gets to be fun.
And most importantly, it's about having more fun and not being so damn serious about the whole thing.
